BERLIN, Germany — The U.S. women’s basketball team defeated France 97–79 on Sunday to win its fifth FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in a row.

France started quickly and led by as many as 14 points. The young U.S. squad fought back, however, and trailed by only two points at halftime after a 3-pointer by Caitlin Clark.

In the second half, the United States took control. The team outscored France 11–2 during a key stretch and finished the third quarter ahead 73–57.

Breanna Stewart led the U.S. with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists. She was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Jackie Young also helped spark the comeback.

Seven of the 12 U.S. players, including Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, were playing in their first major international tournament. The team was also without A’ja Wilson.

The World Cup is held every four years and brings together leading national teams from around the globe. This was the 20th tournament, with 16 teams competing. Spain finished third after beating Germany 81–58.
