North and South Korea Join Forces

For the first time in years, athletes from North and South Korea came together to compete as a unified team. They marched under a special flag called the "unification flag" during the opening ceremony. This flag was first used in 1991 at the World Table Tennis Championships.

Winter Games in South Korea

The Olympic Winter Games took place from February 9 to 25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. South Korea is located in Asia on the Korean Peninsula. After World War II ended in 1945, Korea was divided into two countries: North Korea and South Korea.

A Step Towards Peace

Since their division, North and South Korea have experienced many conflicts, and their border has been closed for many years. However, in January, the two countries began talks, leading to this special moment at the Winter Games.

Where the Events Happened

The sports events were held in Pyeongchang, a ski resort that hosted skiing, snowboarding, and sliding events. Gangneung, a larger city about an hour away, hosted skating, hockey, and curling events.
