A Tiny Patch of Sky Full of Galaxies

Hubble looked at a tiny, seemingly empty patch of sky and found thousands of distant galaxies.

When we look at the night sky, even a spot that seems empty may hide thousands of galaxies.

The famous Hubble Deep Field observations showed this. The Hubble Space Telescope watched a tiny area of sky for many hours where almost nothing had been visible before.

The image revealed thousands of distant galaxies, each with millions or billions of stars. The area was so small that it could be covered by a tiny grain of sand held at arm’s length.
