Jawed Karim Updated His First YouTube Video Description
Jawed Karim used the description of “Me at the zoo,” YouTube’s first video, to publicly criticize YouTube decisions.
9/23/2026Jawed Karim, a co-founder of YouTube and the creator of the first video posted there, “Me at the zoo,” used that video’s description several times to publicly criticize YouTube’s decisions.
In 2013, he protested YouTube’s rule requiring a Google+ account to comment on videos. He wrote that he could no longer comment because he did not want to create such an account.
In 2021, he changed the description again after YouTube decided to hide the public dislike count. He wrote that if nearly all YouTubers think removing the count is a stupid idea, “it probably is,” and a few days later posted a much longer criticism of the decision.
