The Tasmanian Tiger
The thylacine looked like a dog or wolf, but it was a marsupial with its own unusual family tree.
9/22/2026The Tasmanian thylacine, also called the marsupial wolf or the Tasmanian tiger, was the largest carnivorous marsupial to survive into modern times.
It looked surprisingly like a dog or wolf, but it was not closely related to either. This similarity developed independently through convergent evolution.
The thylacine belonged to an Australian group of marsupials that also includes Tasmanian devils and numbats. Its distinctive dark stripes on the back part of its body gave it the popular name Tasmanian tiger.
