Giant Squid May Number in the Millions

Although it is extremely difficult to spot a living giant squid, Architeuthis dux probably lives in the oceans in numbers reaching millions.

One important clue is the beaks of these animals found in sperm whale stomachs. Based on whale populations and studies of what they eat, scientists estimated that sperm whales alone may eat from several million to more than 100 million giant squid each year.

However, the exact population of Architeuthis is still unknown.
